INOV’s Commitment to Biodiversity: A Sustainable Legacy

Biodiversity, the rich tapestry of life on Earth, is undeniably one of our planet’s most invaluable treasures. It encompasses the variety of species, ecosystems, and genetic diversity that sustains life as we know it. Furthermore, the importance of biodiversity for the European Union (EU) cannot be overstated, as it serves as a cornerstone of the EU’s sustainable development goals and policies.

The EU acknowledges the critical significance of biodiversity, as it underpins life on Earth, provides essential ecosystem services, and supports various facets of human well-being. However, the relentless onslaught of unsustainable human activities has resulted in a staggering 60% decline in global wild species populations over the past four decades, putting approximately one million species at risk of extinction.

To confront this pressing crisis, the EU has laid out a comprehensive strategy within its European Green Deal and EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. These initiatives emphasize the urgency of heightened research and innovation efforts. The goal is clear: to restore Europe’s biodiversity by 2030. Achieving this objective necessitates harnessing the power of research and innovation to meet policy targets and craft holistic nature-based solutions.

INOV, a distinguished research and development institute, stands on the front lines of the battle to preserve and comprehend biodiversity. Our commitment is exemplified through our active involvement in EU-funded Horizon 2020 projects, namely AgriBIT, MedFoodTTHubs, and TRUSTyFOOD. These initiatives are at the forefront of addressing critical issues such as the impact of agricultural practices, enhancing Mediterranean food systems, and improving food traceability and safety.

With a legacy of biodiversity research and state-of-the-art technology at our disposal, we continuously monitor and decipher biodiversity patterns and changes. Our commitment extends beyond research, as we actively raise awareness through workshops, educational programs, and participation in industry events.

On the Portuguese front, INOV is proud to be the developer of the CICLOPE remote monitoring system for large areas, used in forest fire prevention by the Civil Protection and Republican National Guard. This tool places cutting-edge technology at the service of the protection of the Portuguese territory and its biodiversity.

INOV’s unwavering dedication to biodiversity and sustainable development shall extend into the future. We are poised and committed to actively participate in upcoming European projects and initiatives that align with our mission to preserve and understand biodiversity. With a history of successful collaboration and a wealth of expertise, INOV is primed to engage in addressing the pressing challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

As new opportunities emerge, INOV remains steadfast in its pursuit of innovative solutions and international cooperation, ensuring the protection of our planet’s precious natural heritage for generations to come.
