Dr. Helena Alves presents Safefire project

Dr. Helena Alves presents Safefire project

On March 14, INOV – INESC Inovação had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Helena Alves from INESC MN for the first Regular Tech Talk (RTT) of the year.

Dr. Helena Alves is a researcher in the field of organic electronics and is responsible for the Safefire project, which develops prototypes of wearables for firefighters and first responders.

Wearables differ from conventional electronic devices in that they are more comfortable and safer for operatives.

As well as being able to withstand temperatures of 300º, these devices must also be able to withstand 100 washing cycles at 90º.

The Safefire project is particularly important, given that the textile sector accounts for 10% of Portuguese exports.

The presentation was strongly attended by researchers from the H2020 RESCUER project, which develops cutting-edge electronics for first responders.

This was another step towards creating synergies between the various INESC Lisboa institutes, thus promoting the transfer of knowledge from academia to the field.

Training Workshop: “Horizon Europe for ICT: An Overview”

Training Workshop: “Horizon Europe for ICT: An Overview”

On February 14, INESC ID is set to host a training workshop focused on the Pre-award phase of European projects. This initiative is open to staff and researchers from INESC ID, INOV, and INESC MN. Facilitated by Matthieu Py, the European Strategy Officer at Inria (France), the workshop will be divided into two parts. The first part will cover fundamental principles for preparing Horizon Europe applications, while the second part will focus on more specific topics of interest to the development of project proposals.

This workshop is a key component of the Olissipo project, a Twinning initiative involving collaboration between INESC-ID, Inria, ETH, and EMBL. Its primary objective is to enhance research management and administration skills. Building on the success of previous editions held in Lisbon in 2022 and 2023, which gathered the participation of over 40 attendees, this edition will capacitate researchers and staff with practical knowledge for the pre-award phase of Horizon Europe Proposals.

Register here for this event (free but mandatory).

Demystifying Zero-Knowledge in Blockchain Technology: an INESC Lisboa Talk

Demystifying Zero-Knowledge in Blockchain Technology: an INESC Lisboa Talk

Zero-knowledge (ZK) has emerged as a prominent term in the blockchain landscape, yet its understanding remains elusive to many. The demand for zero-knowledge engineers is on the rise, with attractive compensation packages. Despite a plethora of information available in the form of blog posts, videos, and links, the disorganization of this wealth of knowledge can be overwhelming and intimidating.

To address this issue, INESC Lisboa will be holding a talk this month with Professor Jeroen van de Graaf from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, whose expertise we are sure will shed light on this issue for our engineers, researchers, and other associates.

This presentation, tailored for professionals with a technical background, aims to demystify the terminology and dive into the essence of the ZK hype.

Biography:

Professor Jeroen van de Graaf is a distinguished cryptographer with a focus on both theoretical and applied aspects of cryptographic protocols. His expertise spans unconditional privacy and transparency, encompassing protocols based on noise, election and mixing protocols, general two- and multi-party computation, privacy-preserving machine learning, differential privacy, and verifiable generation of random strings.

Since March 2011, he has been affiliated with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. As of November 2022, he has been contributing his expertise through consulting for Metis/ZKM, further enriching his extensive portfolio in the field of cryptography.

Cooperation With Value: Panel Insights

Cooperation With Value: Panel Insights

In the month of November, the inaugural INESC Lisboa annual meeting stood as a momentous occasion, marking a significant milestone in the collaborative efforts of INESC Inovação (INOV), INESC ID, and INESC MN. This event, held on the 3rd of November, brought together these esteemed research institutions, serving as a platform for the convergence of ideas, expertise, and visionary pursuits.

Collaboration among such distinguished institutions is a cornerstone for fostering innovation and investigation in Portugal. The synergy of these intellectual powerhouses goes beyond symbolism; it reflects a collective commitment to advancing the nation’s progress through collaborative research and innovation efforts.

A noteworthy highlight of this historic gathering was the enlightening panel hosted by INOV, aptly titled “Cooperation with Value.” Under the capable moderation of Fernando Moreira, Chairman of the Board at INOV, the panel featured the active participation of several INOV partners who have played pivotal roles in the organization’s journey over the years.

The panel delved into the intricate dynamics of cultivating collaboration that reaches beyond mere innovation. It sought to create substantial, tangible value. In an age where the pursuit of knowledge is intricately intertwined with the pursuit of progress, the insights shared during this panel underscore the paramount importance of strategic cooperation in shaping the future of research and innovation.

Carlos Guerra, a Comandante Sub-regional from the Leiria Region, shared the captivating journey of the CICLOPE system. Rather than discarding the initial emphasis on human monitoring, the project chose to bolster it, resulting in a groundbreaking system. CICLOPE extended its reach beyond fire detection, offering Civil Protection comprehensive decision support. What’s particularly intriguing is the system’s ability to provide customized tools tailored precisely to the operational needs. It’s a story of evolution, fortitude, and adaptability.

Luis Santo leads the FAQtos project. His presentation introduced the audience to the world of FAQtos, shedding light on its goals and ambitions. Luis also revealed exciting collaborations with INOV, exploring other areas currently under development. What stood out was his revelation of additional partnerships with INESC Brussels Hub and INESC TEC, underlining the project’s commitment to wide-ranging innovation.

Paulo de Carvalho Pinto played a key role in the Key’N Go project, in which he oversaw the transformation of low-cost car rental. Under his leadership, the project successfully improved its Net Promoter Score (NPS) from negative to positive. In addition, Paulo highlighted the significant contributions of researchers such as Professor Miguel Mira da Silva, who wrote several impactful articles that profoundly influenced the project. Paulo’s story is testimony to the transformative power of innovation in enabling companies to adapt and thrive in a constantly evolving landscape, as well as INOV’s commitment to technology transfer.

Finally, Paulo Soeiro, Innovation Manager at Grupo Visabeira, brought to light the complexities of the Ria Stone unit, which plays an exclusive role in production for the global giant, IKEA. He emphasized the fundamental role of the quality control technology developed by INOV, an essential catalyst for progress. However, Paulo frankly acknowledged the challenges of productization, demonstrating the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of innovation. It was, in fact, to meet these challenges that the Unyma brand (including Unyma Quality) was born.

These interventions and discussions within the panel underscore the pivotal role of collaborative efforts in shaping technological advancements and driving innovation in Portugal. Such initiatives not only propel progress but also lay the foundation for a dynamic and robust future for research and innovation in the country.
